Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
