Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to question particular calls made by the official, echoing the practice already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
